About the Institution

The Jewish Museum Frankfurt was established in 1988, its director since February 2006 has been Prof. Dr. Raphael Gross. The purpose of the Jewish Museum is the collection and preservation of testimonials of German-Jewish history and culture, the distribution of knowledge on Judaism and its history, and establishing a forum for dialogue between Jews and non-Jews. Established in 1988, the museum is integrated in a Europe wide network of Jewish museums (among others, the Jewish Museum Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Brussels, etc.), sharing intense exchange. Close connections are also maintained with academic institutions, some of them as a result of projects, others based on permanent structures, such as the Commission for the Research of the History of the Jews of Frankfurt. In its main building (in the Rothschildpalais at 14-15, Untermainkai), and in its branch, the Museum Judengasse (10, Kurt Schumacher Street), the Jewish Museum maintains an extensive permanent exhibit on Jewish history, from antiquity to the postwar era, as well as on religious traditions, holidays, etc. In addition, the Museum Judengasse features accessible excavations of the medieval Jewish ghetto (Judengasse), and exhibits of archaeological finds in that area. Since 2003, the Museum Judengasse features the so-called Oskar und Emilie Schindler Study Center, functioning as a center for the museum's educational programs, appealing directly to youth groups and school classes. In addition to the exhibits, the results of the Jewish Museum's research activity are presented in publications, such as exhibition catalogs, or in the museum's book series.
